We had the good fortune of connecting with Juliano Teruel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Juliano, how did you fund your business? Do you think you would do anything different if you could go back?
My business started as a passion. It was something I really enjoyed doing everyday, even before I made a dollar on it. You can never go wrong doing something that you truly love and if you can figure out a way to make money with it, it’s the perfect cenário. If I could go back, I would not do anything different. I was very smart and never borrowed money, never got into debt, and didn’t use a lot of credit cards to start my business like most people. When I did use a credit card, I would make sure to have a plan of how to pay it all within 3-4 months with no interest. I also made sure to not have any overhead and tried not to go too big too soon. The number one thing was, I always made sure I was available for my clients, made sure my clients felt that they were a priority, and always went an extra 3 miles for them at any given moment.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started as a professional swimmer, that has a story of it’s own, but let’s move on from that for now. Let’s just say no matter what I did and still do, everything has required a lot of sacrifice, more in the past than now, it’s a different type of sacrifice now. I became a successful swimmer where I went to the Olympic trials, but missed the Olympic Games by just a little. I moved to America from Brazil to go to school, learn better English, and give my Olympic dream another shot. I decided to change sports after meeting a lot of professional triathletes where I lived. I thought I could do it all over but in a brand new sport and with an advantage on most by being a good swimmer. I then became a professional triathlete and raced all over the world and had sponsors, meanwhile I started helping individuals on the side with training and mental toughness, and that was when my coaching brand really started. Little by little I made my coaching more effective. I made it my way, with my own techniques, and my personality played a big part in it. How I run my business is through a very unique way of coaching, by truly helping and guiding individuals. It was not easy at all, but loving it and walking the talk for sure made it easier. I stand by doing things with love, passion, being unique, and finding the fun in it.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Honestly, I am a home-body at this stage of my life, I get up very early, take care of my animals, train a lot outdoors and cook at home with my lovely wife Becca, we do everything together, or most of everything for sure. I would mostly show where the beautiful trails, rides, coffee shops, and small local foods are. I did get to know a lot of spots people really don’t get to see because they are so hidden.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think there was several people but there is one person in particular that I will never forget, his name was Jurgen Zack. Jurgen was a 5 time Ironman world champion and was also my training partner. He was a German superstar at the time and he taught me a lot. He taught me about the importance of personal relationships, he taught me how to be able to adapt in almost any cenário, to enjoy what you do everyday, to be smart and unique in anything you do, to be happy all the time, and to work harder and smarter above all.
